Vere Gordon Childe 14 April — 19 October was an Australian archaeologist who specialized in the study of European prehistory. He spent most of his life in the United Kingdom, working as an academic for the University of Edinburgh and then the Institute of Archaeology, London, and wrote twenty-six books during his career.
Initially an early proponent of culture-historical archaeology, he later became the first exponent of Marxist archaeology in the Western world. Few books are as clear as this one, explaining pre-history. Destined to the general public, and not to a specialized group, this book make us realize how incredibly limited is the information we have on the history of humanity on earth.
An excellent introduction to the subject which is not as dated as I expected. Of course, Childe was writing long before the latest fascinating revelations of genetic studies, but he was broadly right, it seems to me, about the Kurgan Hypothesis of Marija Gimbautas, of which he was an early champion. Childe was interestingly unusual: supremely intelligent, extremely ugly, very odd, and despite or because of his privileged background also an unrepentant Marxist.
I am usually allergic to the writ An excellent introduction to the subject which is not as dated as I expected. I am usually allergic to the writings of Marxist historians like Eric Hobsbawm for the same reasons I am bored by the writings of any wrong-headed fanatic who twists the data to force it into the straightjacket of a discredited theory.
However, what saves this is that Childe was brilliant at succinct synthesis, and writes engagingly, deeply, and widely. But Childe escapes the same dustbin by virtue of his lack of dogmatism and the fascination of his subject matter.
Childe provides an encyclopedic scope on archeological findings prior to and up to the publication of his work. This book provides so much detail that it can be overwhelming. It's a must-read though! Banyak hal-hal detail berharga yg sangat informative.
Salah satunya terkait bagaimana pemikiran abstrak muncul, bagaimana seni lukis muncul dst.
Yg kedua adalah tentang law of univen and combined development alias hukum perkembangan tak berimbang dan tergabungkan.
Itulah kenapa ratingnya 4. Karena belum cukup memuaskan curiosity saya. Mar 21, Daniel Ochoa rated it liked it. Apr 06, Renata Ruano rated it really liked it.
If you would like to read a book on the beginning of human life, this is it. The book explains how our society worked on prehistory. I had to read this for school and i thought it would be extremely boring, to my surprise it wasn't at all. It's fluidly written and interesting. Verne circles his book on evolution, how everything started; from art to cooking, he explains the beginning of it all. Very good and a quick read.
I have detailed notes if anyone wants them. Originally published in England in View all 3 comments.
