If writing novels is like planting a forest, then writing short stories is more like planting a garden. The two processes complement each other, creating a complete landscape that I treasure. The green foliage of the trees casts a pleasant shade over the earth, and the wind rustles the leaves, which are sometimes dyed a brilliant gold. Meanwhile, in the garden, buds appear on flowers, and colorful petals attract bees and butterflies, reminding us of the subtle transition from one season to the next. The book picked up towards the end, with really nice storiesBut one has to live through waste of time pieces throughout the book mostly for the first three quarters before one is treated to the nice ones what is glory without suffering? Juan Benet combined his work as a civil engineer with his career as a writer. He became one of the most influential figures in Spanish post-war literature.

Although he was particularly prolific in the genres of the novel and essay, he also experimented with short story writing and drama. Benet died without having received any of the big prizes of the Spanish literary scene, but he is currently compared with literary giants such as Marcel Proust, James Joyce and William Faulkner.

His work has inspired a vast following.

This novel consists of a single long paragraph, a "meditation"" on the provincial, the erotic, the obsessional, the conscious. Set in a rea called Region, the book casts disparate elements —bits of family history, the story of a local inn owned by a mysterious and dusky woman, the effect of the civil war, incest and sexual implacabilities— into a stream of apothegms and snaky reflections. The doctor, who has a disturbed child in his care, strikes up an evocative dialogue with his guest about the events of the war in the Region, and about what happened before and after.

The monologues that emerge from this dialogue spotlight the fragmentation, violence and alienation of modern life in Spain and permeate Return to Region with an allegorical view of Spanish history that constitutes a definitive break with the formats of the traditional novel.

Segundo volumen. Benet considers the essentially dual nature of the spy and the curious World War II cases of Julius Norke and William Joyce Lord Haw-Haw to conclude, in a spark of lucid reflection, that within the order of the State, the traitor is not only necessary, but welcome.

Su augurio se ha cumplido plenamente. En ellos, Benet reflexiona sobre temas muy diversos, no necesariamente de actualidad. El aire de un crimen, Skip to main content. Juan Benet, embarking on a career in literature as a rebellious atheist, had already begun to show signs of writing like a god. His work as a novelist and also his work as a literary essayist. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that as a literary essayist, he has very few peers.

For years, in his novels and essays, he carried out the most ambitious project in Spanish literature of the second half of the previous century. Bibliography Novel El caballero de Sajonia, En la penumbra, En el estado, Un viaje de invierno, Cuentos completos 2. Cuentos completos 1.
