Comment your thoughts. Image Credit: Carlos Fairbairn Ancient civilizations would use the night sky as a means of navigation or as a way to develop patterns for things like farming or harvesting. Additionally, they would recognize patterns and shapes in the alignment of certain stars, and then make associations to animals or mythological figures.
As of today, there are 88 recognized constellations in the sky by the International Astronomical Union. Pictured above is the commonly known constellation of Orion, named after a hunter in Greek Mythology.
However, this constellation has become recognized in several different cultures across the world and throughout history, such as Roman, Middle Eastern, Asian, European, and American cultures. These stars are referred to as the Three Kings or the Three Sisters. The constellation also has the star Betelgeuse, which is the orange star in the bottom left of the image, and the Orion Nebula, which is the purple smudge to the right of the belt.
Massive stars, abrasive winds, mountains of dust, and energetic light sculpt one of the largest and most picturesque regions of star formation in the Local Group of Galaxies. The above image was taken for scientific purposes by the Hubble Space Telescope and reprocessed for artistry by an amateur to win the Hubble's Hidden Treasures competition. Studying the stars in N11 has shown that it actually houses three successive generations of star formation.
Compact globules of dark dust housing emerging young stars are also visible around the image. That means that if you could stand on the surface of Mercury, it would take a staggering Earth days for the Sun to rise, set and rise again to the same place in the sky just once!
Here are the top 3 contestants till yet kunal. According to Einstein's theory of general relativity the higher gravity on earth's surface makes time move more slowly relative to time on mars.
Our primitive ancestors, already afoot on the African plains, likely would have witnessed this flare as a ghostly glow high overhead in the constellation Sagittarius.
It might have persisted for 1 million years. Now, eons later, astronomers are using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope's unique capabilities to uncover even more clues about this cataclysmic explosion.
Looking to the far outskirts of our galaxy, they found that the black hole's floodlight reached so far into space it illuminated a vast train of gas trailing the Milky Way's two prominent satellite galaxies: the Large Magellanic Cloud LMC and its companion, the Small Magellanic Cloud SMC.
The black hole outburst was probably caused by a large hydrogen cloud up to , times the Sun's mass falling onto the disk of material swirling near the central black hole. The resulting outburst sent cones of blistering ultraviolet radiation above and below the plane of the galaxy and deep into space.
The flash lit up a portion of the stream, ionizing its hydrogen enough to make million Suns by stripping atoms of their electrons. We're learning about how the black hole impacts the galaxy and its environment. Located about 17, light-years from Earth, the black hole siphons material from a partner star; together, the black hole and star are known as XTE J stringtheory universetoday cosmos physicslovers physics quantumtheory quantumparticles quantummechanics saturn nutrino electron moon nebula bigbang blackhole biologylovers nasa alberteinstein particlephysics astrobiology astrophysics michiokaku stephenhawking alberteinstein astronomy neildegrassetyson blackhole hubble astronomynerd luna.
Reality is frequently inaccurate so Dan Falk is the author of The Science of Shakespeare which delves into the history of science's relationship with Shakespeare's work. He is also a broadcaster and science journalist.
