It begins in late autumn as an elderly Italian woman, prompted by the knowledge of her encroaching death, sits down to write a letter to her granddaughter now grown and living in far-off America.

Through these moving reflections, we see one life laid bare--joys, sorrows, regrets, and all. And through the eyes of a woman nearing the end of her days, we come to understand what life experience has taught her: that no matter what the stakes, we must look within ourselves and gather the courage to follow our hearts.

The author conveys her messages through letters written from a grandmother to her cynical granddaughter. She tries to make her see that we are all threads linked together in a bigger picture, and the importance of listening to what is inside of you.

She uses wonderful imagery and her observations may apply to you at different points in your life. I think this is one of those books you either love or dislike completely, depending on your frame of mind when you read it. Her style is somewhat poetic and poignant but her messages come across clearly.

Human heart can be fragile and strong at the same time: Fragile, cos it breaks easily. Strong, cos it usually finds its own particular ways of healing. And it's in that eternal breaking healing cycle, that consciousness seems to evolve. What a masochist kind of consciousness humans have! View 1 comment.

May 02, Mochizuki rated it really liked it Shelves: romance-erotic-affairs. This book is deeply moving because it deals so closely with issues close to the human heart. The prose is simple and uplifting, the story just an excuse to reveal to us universal truths that we all know but refuse to acknowledge.

Critical and cynical people might brush this book aside but I feel that one really has to look very deeply into it to really discover its true worth. This must be read with an open mind and I feel that the ending is particularly apt because there is none. This situation This book is deeply moving because it deals so closely with issues close to the human heart.

This situation could be so easily applied to our daily lives and the author is telling us in simple gracious terms that patience and undersanding should be the forefront of our relationship with our family. Despite the somewhat muddled use of the flashback technique and several narratives that are a little to rambling, this is a jewel that teaches love, in a world where there is little to be found.

May 14, Stacy rated it really liked it. This is the brutally honest letter a grandmother who is nearing death writes to the granddaughter she raised alone.

Her granddaughter is obviously a headstrong young woman who has moved to America leaving her grandmother in Italy heartbroken and alone.

The grandmother can feel death coming and wants to leave her granddaughter a letter of history and hope for the future. She pulls no punches. She is not afraid to illuminate her own shortcomings as well as those around her, granddaughter included.

It is difficult to read that she did not think about her daughter for several years after her death or that she did not love her daughter enough without your heart breaking a little. This is a woman who was not going to spare her granddaughter the truth. I was pulled in right from the beginning. It was real and honest and a great story of three generations of women who all seemed to be fighting the past.

It is definitely a worthwhile read. I couldn't hate the story completely, but I really didn't like Olga. There is a certain fatalism in every thing she says, in how she even thinks. It is as if though she believes all her actions, no matter how free they were, led her and her family to that inevitable end.

It was not my kind of book, but I won't say it was a bad one. It might be your cup of tea. View all 3 comments. Apr 16, Alisha rated it really liked it. Believing that life's immutable, that once you get on a particular track you have to follow it to the end of the line. Jul 02, booklady rated it it was ok Shelves: , women. It sounded so appealing and started off promising enough, but there was an inconsistency somewhere.

What should have been a poignant memoir left me feeling sad for the characters as individuals and yet not moved by the story as a whole. Tamaro is not the best writer, she needs a better editor or I have just been spoiled by some fine writing recently. An easy quick read, but still not worth recommending.

Winter is approaching, and with it, an elderly woman's death. Everything is in order, except her affairs of the heart. She sits at her desk, composing the final chapter of her life-a confession-a letter to the granddaughter she raised.

It is the ultimate gift of lo Winter is approaching, and with it, an elderly woman's death. It is the ultimate gift of love and liberation, from one woman to another-a road map straight to the center of ourselves, where we can gather the courage to follow our hearts.

I did not find any "center" to this book, and I definitely didn't feel inspired to find my "center" after reading it. Sep 27, Ancilla Irwan rated it really liked it Shelves: in-english. We have to use other's shoes before we can judge them.
