I have collected a fair number of small boat building manuals, perhaps as many as twenty. Boat building manuals must be extremely difficult to write for two main reasons: first, there are at least a dozen or more different building techniques for wood alone, not including steel, aluminum, fiberglass, ferrocement, and a number of more dubious materials.
Second, as I have discovered in woodworking generally, and this carries over to both traditional and contemporary wooden boat building techniques I have collected a fair number of small boat building manuals, perhaps as many as twenty. Second, as I have discovered in woodworking generally, and this carries over to both traditional and contemporary wooden boat building techniques, there are many, many different ways to carry out specific operations, depending on how much time, money, tools, patience, and ingenuity one has.
Typically, boat building manuals suffer from this indeterminacy because it forces impossible choices on the writer - who is typically him or herself a professional builder first, not a writer although I have generally found builders to write well. Does one produce a general purpose work, or does one cater specifically to a specific style? A further issue, all too rarely addressed in the literature - but one that I am coming to think should be front and center in any manual - are the emotional issues of not being discouraged and keeping up momentum over the long haul of a boat project.
Although the venerable account by Howard I Chappelle has not that much on such issues, Chapelle himself urged the builder to have in his or her shop a "Moaning Chair" precisely for moments of emotional crisis, of which there can be several or many in a project. Both their manuals contain a strong strain of advice directed at emotional management and using tools, materials, and technique to reduce frustration and maintain emotional commitment. Oughtred ranks with Welsford in terms of the success of his designs for amateur building.
Like Welsford, while aspects of this book are of general reference to any boatbuilder or even many woodworkers, he is focused on the specific technique of plywood lapstrake "clinker" in British English using modern adhesives most commonly epoxy. Of emotional management, I found fairly little in this book, and in many ways the book follows the conventional format of early general chapters on wood selection, tools, and technique.
However, the value of this book from the standpoint of a reader - and specifically a reader who is building an Oughtred-designed boat - is that the book is laid out highly sequentially with discrete steps illustrated by photo or drawing.
The accompanying text for each photo is brief. It in fact puts me in mind of the kind of manuals that one gets with a boat kit from a firm like Chesapeake Light Craft.
I happen to think that this is the correct way to depict such things, if the book form is chosen. In my own case, I am in the early stages of preparing to build one of Oughtred's designs, the popular Caledonia Yawl. However, even a good video can't discuss everything, and I don't want to bring such videos to bed, or peruse them in a few minutes of spare time.
Hence, to my mind anyway, there is value in a good manual such as this one, particularly one like this that is so lavishly illustrated that one can pick and choose the steps one wants to focus on at any particular time. While no manual can achieve completeness and be readable, and while video is correctly making inroads in educating people on how to build boats, it is my hope that books like this one will continue to be printed and form part of a comprehensive armament of knowledge that helps the novice builder realize success.
