Atpresent there are ten known occurrences of diatomaceous deposits, all occur in the northem half of CostaRica, closely associated with late Tertiary Pliocene -Quaterary acid-intermediate volcanism.

Promising avenues forresearch include K. Much of this information has been hard. Finally, acomprehensive bibliog- raphy is incInded for use-as a starting point for future workers. Here they accumulate in vast numbers 0 form diatomaceous oozes which subsquently compact to form diatomite. The shape of these valves enables classification into two principal types: the centric and pennate dia- toms.

Their distribution ranges from polar to tropical lati- tures, although in the oceans, sub-polar and tem- erate latitudes are preferred by many species. As relatively simple forms of life diatoms probably have along geological history though fossil evidence seems to indicate that they flour- ished markedly in the Cretaceous and have been abundant in Tertiary and Quatemary times.

However, older diatom-rich deposits may be dif- ficult to recognize in the stratigraphic record due to their conversion into cher by diagenetic proc- esses. All commercially valuable diatomites are late Tertiary or Quaternary in age. The loosely-packed accumulation of these hollow, perforate skele- tons results in a very lightweight sediment with a large proportion of interconnected voids.

Consequent upon these basic charac- teristics are a series of properties which make diatomites of great value in a wide range of applications. These properties include high porosity and permeability, low density, high absorption, very large surface arca, low abrasion, low thermal conductivity and moderately refrac- tory behaviour.

The main aimsof processing are toremove most of this water to grind the material tothe required size, and to remove the impurities. In order to preserve the delicate skele- tal strcture of the diatoms, milling is normally accomplished using spiked or ribbed rollers, rathet than more conventional methods. Separation of the impurities and air from the dried powder is then achieved by a series of separators and cy- clones producing the required dry diatomite powder.

Theaddition of flux 1ux-calcination helps the aggregation process and prevents the oxida- tion of iron impurities which can give the end- product a pinkish colouration. The principal uses of diatomite are as afilter-aid, a filler, an absorbant, a mild abrasive and an insulator. Each use utilizes spe- cific properties or combinations of properties of the diatomite powder.

Fluids commonly clarified include wine, beer, swimming. The small size of the passagewavs and openings in the diatom skele-. More From Darwin Zuni Rosado. Darwin Zuni Rosado. Juan Fierro. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

The BPVC was created in response to public outcry after several serious explosions in the state of Massachusetts. A fire-tube boiler exploded at the Grover Shoe Factory in Brockton, Massachusetts , on March 20, , which resulted in the deaths of 58 people and injured Then on December 6, , a boiler in the factory of the P. Harney Shoe Company exploded in Lynn, Massachusetts.
