The loosely-packed accumulation of these hollow, perforate skele- tons results in a very lightweight sediment with a large proportion of interconnected voids.
Consequent upon these basic charac- teristics are a series of properties which make diatomites of great value in a wide range of applications. These properties include high porosity and permeability, low density, high absorption, very large surface arca, low abrasion, low thermal conductivity and moderately refrac- tory behaviour.
The main aimsof processing are toremove most of this water to grind the material tothe required size, and to remove the impurities. In order to preserve the delicate skele- tal strcture of the diatoms, milling is normally accomplished using spiked or ribbed rollers, rathet than more conventional methods. Separation of the impurities and air from the dried powder is then achieved by a series of separators and cy- clones producing the required dry diatomite powder.
Theaddition of flux 1ux-calcination helps the aggregation process and prevents the oxida- tion of iron impurities which can give the end- product a pinkish colouration. The principal uses of diatomite are as afilter-aid, a filler, an absorbant, a mild abrasive and an insulator. Each use utilizes spe- cific properties or combinations of properties of the diatomite powder.
